What is a Family Story?
Family Story is a premium video service that captures video interviews with your loved ones, combines them with home movies & photos and delivers a fully edited documentary style keepsake that will last for generations. We do this through virtual interview sessions or on-site filming with our professional production crew.
How does it work?
We capture your family’s story through interviews. Depending on which package you select, you can have a virtual or in-person interview session along with coaching to capture your family’s story. All packages include guided interview questions, coaching, and links to all interview footage organized chronologically.
Can I give Family Story as a gift?
Absolutely! We believe Family Story makes the perfect present from birthdays to holidays. Simply purchase a package and we will send you a certificate via email for you to present to friends and family.
How does virtual filming work?
Virtual filming works by having our secure recording platform run through your phone or computer. We will send you information on how to get started recording and coach you through the interview process.
Here’s a simple checklist to help you prepare for your filming day:
Make sure you have a strong and reliable internet connection in your filming location.
Free up space on the phone to be used to make room for the video we will be recording (you won't need to keep the recording long just long enough for us to download the footage).
Download the Riverside App. If you are using a computer to film, you will not need to download the app. You’ll be able to use Riverside just in your browser.
Secure space within the home or location to conduct the shoot. This does not need to be big but it should be indoors and quiet. If you are not using a ring light or other lighting then pick a place in the home that is bright or has a window.
Come camera-ready. Usually, this means hair and makeup done in a way the the interviewees feel comfortable and confident.
Can Family Story add my old photos to our interview?
Yes! If you select the Virtual Standard or the In-Person Premium packages we will incorporate your photos and videos into a fully edited Family Story Film.
How do I submit my photos?
Don’t worry about mailing precious photos to us! You can simply upload your photos through a simple and easy web portal that we provide. And if you need help to capture photos on the day of your filming we’re more than happy to assist and guide you through the process.
When do I pay?
During your (free) Consultation Call with our Family Story Expert, you’ll select a filming day that works best for you. Once it’s scheduled, we’ll bill your credit card on file. If you change your mind or can’t find a day that works, just let us know on the call and you won’t be charged.
What methods of payment do you accept?
We accept credit / debit card payments through our website and invoicing.
What equipment do I need if I purchased one of the virtual options?
All you need is a mobile device that meets our technical requirements.
Apple: OSiPhones and iPads with iOS 15.0 or later.
Android: Android devices with Android 7.0 or later.
Storage: We recommend having at least 5 GB of free space.
If you prefer to use a computer with a webcam you can certainly do that as well but mobile devices tend to look and sound better.
Do you travel to all locations?
We currently travel to Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Alabama. Please check back or contact us if your state is not listed.
How long does the interview process take?
The standard set up and interview session takes 3 hours and we provide coaching along with guided interview questions to make the process as seamless as possible.
What is your cancellation policy for filming days?
You can reachedule your filming day up to 24 hours in advance. Anything inside 24 hours requires a $150 rebooking fee.
Can I record multiple family members across different states/time zones?
Yes! You can use your virtual filming day however you would like but it is important to remember that both the Virtual Basic and Virtual Standard packages come with 3 hours of interview time. Multiple participants in multiple locations may require the purchase of additional filming time. It’s also important to remember that each virtual filming location requires a dedicated family member to provide technical support on location.
Our In-Person Premium product is only serving select states in the Southeastern United States. For this service we recommend having all participants travel to one location for filming. Add-on in-person filming days can be purchased if needed.
Can I add on extra filming days & editing?
Certainly! Upgrades are available for each of our product offerings. Ask your Family Story Expert if you feel as though you are in need of additional filming or editing, and they will be able to get you a quote upon request.
What is a virtual filming kit?
Our virtual filming kits are an optional add-on that come standard with a ring light, device mount and 2 wireless lav microphones that connect directly to your mobile device.
Can I make changes to the video?
Yes! While we do have a standard format for the Family Story Film we include one round of changes to the Virtual Standard and In-Person Premium products. For these products we will provide a review link and you can request edits and changes directly on your Family Story Film. Additional changes can be purchased upon request.
How long does it take to complete the whole process?
The time to complete a Family Story may vary due to available reservations for virtual and in-person filming. But, once your filming day has occurred, the editing process typically takes 4-6 weeks before a final product is delivered.
